In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like peace is something we must chase. With the constant noise, notifications, and pressures around us, finding moments of calm can seem impossible. However, amidst all this chaos, there is a quiet power that can help us find peace—stillness. By learning to pause, reflect, and embrace quiet moments, we can discover the inner peace that grounds us, no matter what’s happening around us.

The Science Behind Stillness: Finding Calm Amidst Change
You might wonder, can stillness really help us find peace? According to a study published in the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, the answer is yes. Practicing mindfulness, which often includes stillness, has been shown to reduce the brain's reactivity to stress. But that’s not all—it also helps people live with constant change.
When we take time to pause and reflect, we give our brains a break from overstimulation, which makes us more resilient to life’s ups and downs.
Spiritual Growth Through Stillness: Trusting In Gods Peace
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to think that peace is something we’ll only find once everything in life is perfect. But peace isn’t something that comes from outside circumstances—it comes from trusting God’s love and control.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) reminds us: “Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” This verse teaches us that if we lean on God and trust Him, He will fill us with peace beyond understanding. Instead of being consumed by anxiety, we can rest in the knowledge that God is in control.
Similarly, Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) promises: “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” By keeping our thoughts fixed on God, stillness becomes a sacred space where we align with God’s timing and plan, knowing that peace isn’t dependent on our circumstances but on our trust in God.
4 Practical Ways to Embrace Stillness
in your Daily Life
Finding stillness may seem challenging, but it’s something we can all cultivate in small, intentional ways. Here are four powerful methods to help you embrace stillness and reconnect with God throughout your day:
Read God’s Word for Inner Peace
One of the most powerful ways to embrace stillness is by immersing yourself in scriptures that bring peace. The Bible offers countless verses that remind us of God’s love, provision, and calming presence. Choose a verse, such as John 14:27 (NLT): “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” Recite this verse, or another that you found during your reading time, throughout your day - especially when anxiety or stress creeps in. Let God’s Word be your anchor, calming your spirit whenever the world feels overwhelming.
Reflect on What’s Causing You Stress
It’s important to reflect on what’s truly causing your stress or anxiety. Are your thoughts centered around fear, past experiences, or uncertainties? Reflection allows you to uncover the root of your emotions and gives you the space to begin processing them. Ask yourself, “Why am I feeling this way?” When you take the time to understand the source of your feelings, you can begin to work through them with clarity and grace, allowing stillness to bring you peace.
Be Quiet: Process Emotions Before Sharing
When we’re overwhelmed, the first thing we often want to do is vent to others—whether to friends, family, or even social media. While opening up to trusted individuals can be helpful, the best first step is often to sit in stillness. Instead of immediately sharing your frustrations, take time to be quiet and process your emotions on your own. This practice helps you understand your feelings more deeply, so when you do open up to your circle, you approach the conversation with clarity and peace, rather than frustration.
Relax and Slow Down
Many of the anxious feelings we experience are tied to trying to keep up with the fast pace of life. We rush through our days, attend every event, and constantly feel the pressure to be everywhere all at once. The fear of missing out (FOMO) often leads to stress, anxiety, and even burnout. Taking intentional time to relax and pour into yourself is crucial for finding peace. Slow down and prioritize what really matters in your life. Let go of the need to be constantly “on,” and allow stillness to restore your energy and mental clarity.
Finding Peace Amidst the Noise: Focusing on what You Can Control
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the unpredictability of life. From day-to-day stressors to unexpected challenges, finding peace can seem impossible. However, peace isn’t about controlling every situation—it’s about focusing on what we can control and letting go of the rest.
The Serenity Prayer offers profound wisdom in this regard: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
This prayer teaches us that true peace comes from releasing control over the uncontrollable and trusting that everything will align with our journey in due time. By focusing on what’s within your control—your reactions, thoughts, and moments of stillness—you can maintain calm no matter what life throws your way.
