Pain Was Never Supposed to Make You Less Yourself

Sunrise over a dirt path through open wooden gates, glowing golden through trees and mist in a quiet countryside.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

— Proverbs 4:23

There is a quiet lie that pain likes to tell.

It doesn’t usually arrive all at once.

Instead, it whispers.

“Don’t be so open anymore.”

“Don’t trust so easily.”

“Don’t laugh so loudly.”

“Don’t expect too much.”

“Don’t let people get close.”

Little by little, we begin adjusting ourselves—not because we no longer know who we are, but because we are trying not to be hurt in the same place twice.

😶We become quieter.

😶More guarded.

😶Less expressive.

😶Less trusting.

Sometimes we even mistake this for maturity.

We call it wisdom.

We call it protecting our peace.

We call it guarding our hearts.

….But I have been wondering if we sometimes misunderstand what it means to guard something precious.

guarding your heart is not the same as hardening it.

The Difference Matters

Scripture tells us,

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Notice what it doesn’t say.

✋🏾It doesn’t tell us to close our hearts.

✋🏾It doesn’t tell us to become suspicious of everyone.

✋🏾It doesn’t tell us to stop loving, hoping, creating, trusting, or showing kindness.

It tells us to guard our hearts.

A guard protects what is valuable.

A guard does not destroy what they are protecting.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned a different lesson.

We began believing that becoming harder was the safest way to survive.

….But becoming harder is not always becoming healthier.

Sometimes it is simply becoming further away from ourselves.

Not Every Pain Came From God

Life brings disappointment.

Relationships break.

Dreams change.

People misunderstand us.

Sometimes we are wounded by circumstances.

Sometimes by other people.

Sometimes by our own decisions.

I don’t believe every painful experience was sent by God.

….But I do believe He meets us there—

And I believe He can use even painful seasons to teach us how to carry our hearts with greater wisdom.

Pain may become part of your story.

It was never meant to become your identity.

Don’t Let Pain Become Your Author

Pain can teach us many things.

✅Discernment.

✅Boundaries.

✅Patience.

✅Humility.

✅Compassion.

Those are beautiful gifts.

pain should never become the author of who you are.

If pain convinces you to become smaller…

To hide your kindness…

To stop creating…

To silence your voice…

To believe you must become more digestible to others at the cost of becoming unrecognizable to yourself…

Then pain has begun writing chapters it was never meant to write.

Growth will change you.

Wisdom will change you.

Walking with God will change you.

….But there is a difference between becoming wiser and becoming less yourself.

The goal is not to become untouchable.

The goal is to become deeply rooted.

Keep Your Heart

Maybe guarding your heart looks less like building higher walls…

And more like growing deeper roots.

🌳Roots that know who you are.

🌳Roots that know Whose you are.

🌳Roots that are strong enough to remain tender.

Strong enough to set boundaries without abandoning love.

Strong enough to tell the truth without becoming cruel.

Strong enough to forgive without forgetting wisdom.

Strong enough to remain yourself—even when life invites you to become someone smaller.

💯You do not have to become colder to become wiser.

💯You do not have to become smaller to become safer.

💯You do not have to silence the best parts of yourself simply because someone else mishandled them.

Keep your heart.

Not carelessly.

Not without discernment.

Not without boundaries.

But keep it.

the world does not need another hardened heart.

It needs people whose hearts have been strengthened by wisdom without being emptied of love.

Perhaps that is one of the most courageous choices we can make:

✨To become better without becoming bitter.

✨To become wiser without becoming harder.

✨To become more ourselves—not less.

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to stay connected to yourself while moving through pain, I explore that more deeply in this week’s members-only article:

Inside The Gym for the Mind, we go beyond the question of why pain changes us and begin exploring how to remain rooted in who we are while we heal.

With care,

Amirah

Hi, I’m Dr. Amirah B. Abdullah.

I write about the quiet moments that help us become more of who we were created to be. My hope is that these words help you slow down, reflect, heal, grow, and remember the light you already carry.

I believe some of life’s greatest transformations begin with a single honest thought, a willing heart, and the courage to simply be yourself.

Thank you for spending a little time here with me.
